Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a temporary ceasefire with Russia until the organisation of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During a conference in Kiev, Reuters reports Zelensky said:
My proposal, which I believe our partners can support, is to propose a truce to the Russians until the leaders meet. ”
We remember that the last round of peace talks between the two countries, held on 2 June in Istanbul, did not bring significant progress towards the end of the already three-year war, in addition to the exchange of several proposals and an agreement on a major exchange of prisoners of war, which according to Zelensky, will take place this weekend.
Zelensky, meanwhile, has accused Russia of using peace talks as a tactical maneuver to influence US, namely, President Donald Trump's stance.
“They did this to show the United States that they are constructive,” has said Zelensky, adding further: “Why? To buy time, to delay sanctions something directly dependent on President Trump: whether to postpone new sanctions or not. ”
The Ukrainian leader's proposal comes amid high diplomatic tensions and international expectations for a new push towards peace in Ukraine, while pressure on both sides continues to rise. /Periscopi
