President Trump has decided not to sign a declaration calling for lowering tensions between Iran and Israel, which is being prepared by the Group of the 7 industrialized countries, according to a White House official, is the first testimony to the continuing division between Trump and other leaders gathered for a summit in Alberta, Canada.
The official, who sought to remain anonymous to discuss the joint declaration, which is not public yet, did not say why the president was against the signing.
A copy of the draft declaration, which was provided by The New York Times, calls on both Israel and Iran to stop attacks on each other, which have killed dozens of people in both countries over the past few days, reports NY Times, broadcast Periscope.
A G7 official said the draft declaration was not final and that discussions about the Middle East situation among leaders, including Mr. Trump, were expected to continue throughout Monday and again on Tuesday. The official sought to remain anonymous to discuss a sensitive diplomatic issue.
The draft file expresses deep concern over the conflict, which began Friday when Israel launched air strikes across Iran, including in its nuclear research facilities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said air strikes are necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
