US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on China on Sunday to encourage Iran not to close the Hormuz Strait after Washington carried out attacks on Iranian nuclear plants.
Rubio's comments on the “show Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo” of Fox News came after the Iranian Press TV reported that the Iranian parliament approved a move to close the Hormuz Strait, through which about 20% of global oil and gas flows.
I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to contact them on this, because they depend heavily on the Hormuz Strait for their oil”, said Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser.
If they do, it's another terrible mistake. It's economic suicide for them if they do. And we have the opportunity to deal with this, but other countries also need to consider this. It would hurt other countries' economies much worse than our”.
Rubio said a move to close the strait would be a massive escalation that would merit an answer from the US and others.
The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately give comments.
American officials said “destroyed Iran's key nuclear plants using 14 bunker bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles and over 125 military aircraft. The attacks mark an escalation in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. /Periscopi/
