The incumbent government of Albin Kurti is aiming to build two bridges on both sides of the main bridge over the Iber River, which would connect Serb-run northern Mitrovica with predominantly Albanian-populated South Mitrovica. The announcement of building these bridges has immediately prompted reactions from the EU and the Serbian List, writes Periscope.
The former chief inspector of AKI, Burim Ramadani, has spoken on this matter for Periscope.
Ramadani told Periscopi that the incumbent government must clarify whether it has finally given up the complete opening of the main bridge over Iber. And that only then would new bridges have to be designed.
“... The government in office must clarify: has it officially resigned from opening the main bridge? Only after formalising this, then would new Bridges be designed.”, Ramadani said.
Instead, he stressed that the complete spread of the main bridge is absurd and must be part of an active Kosovo diplomacy, which does not exist.
“S first, I think that the total absence of the main bridge of Ibri is absurd and without security arguments. As a matter addressed only politically, the complete opening of the main bridge has had to be part of an active Kosovo diplomacy that does not exist...”, he has said of Periscope.
According to Ramadani, Kosovo should insist on implementing the Brussels agreement on the Bridge issue. But, according to him, the VVI's behavior in 2017 hurt NATO's confidence.
“ ...Kosovo should insist on implementing the Brussels agreement on the Bridge issue and do so in high-level dialogue with NATO. But VV's completely advanced behavior during the summer of 2024 has hurt trust with NATO...”, Ramadani has indicated.
Unlike the Kosovo government in July last year, it was scheduled to open the bridge over the Iber River for cars as well, but this has caused tensions in Mitrovica and reactions from the international community.
At that time, the KFOR mission, which was deployed with a increased presence on the bridge, had said that Any decision to open the bridge should be taken within the framework of Kosovo's (Serbia) dialogue, which is carried out through the European Union”.
As of today, the bridge over the Iber River in Mitrovica has been subject to technical tests and inspections by European Union experts./AZariqi Ibina PERISKIPI/
