“We are with them all the time”, the American president, questioned about the article, one day after it was reported that Trump did not confirm the commitment.
Article 5 confirms the principle of collective and mutual protection, which means that an attack against a NATO ally is considered an attack on all its members.
On the way to the NATO leaders' summit, Trump had undermined the alliance's basic promise of collective protection, causing tension at the meeting, which aims to keep him interested in European security.
Asked during the trip whether the United States remains committed to the clause of Article 5 of NATO, Trump had told reporters in Air Force One: “depends on your definition. There are numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, don't you? I'm committed to saving lives. I'm committed to life and security. And I'll give you an exact definition when I get there. I just don't want to do this in the back of a plane”, Trump declared on Tuesday.
