Brush sea, white houses, shining sun: The Greek island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea is popular with tourists for a reason, German media write. But he also has his faults. Nowhere else in the EU is mass tourism more widespread than in the Greek islands south of the Aegean Sea.
According to data from the EU statistical agency Eurostat, in Santorini and Mykonos in 2022, there were an average of 110 overnight stays for residents of the island. A bar south of Mykonos certainly wants to benefit especially from the massive influx of tourists.
According to guests and media reports, the sea-looking restaurant sometimes charges 100 euros for a beer, a glass of Coca-Cola costs 35 euros and an Aperol 58 euros. The Tripadvisor travel platform also contains reports of overexploration.
A client at a beach bar was charged with “49 euros for a simple plate of today's” fish, according to a post deemed especially useful.
Another guest shared a photo of a 136-euro bill for two glasses of Prosecco. These excessive prices are not clearly an isolated incident, as similar reports from Santorini show.
Greek government moves against bar in Mykono
An image of 2021 of a bar menu in Mykono appears to confirm reports in Tripadvisor: Local beer reportedly costs 350 euros per bottle, a glass of wine 49 euros and a 25-euro cocktail.
Besides high prices, there is also an obvious lack of transparency: According to reports, tourists were not publicly notified of the costs they would have. Information could not be verified independently.
When two American tourists filed a complaint three years ago for a 600-euro overestimation, the Greek government took action against the bar: Vassilis Kikilias, then tourism minister, ordered the Cikolades Regional Tourism Authority to investigate, Fenix reports.
Bar was fined 31,000 euros for some tax violations in his business data, Greek newspapers reported at the time.
Most complaints date four or five years ago, though one customer reported excessive prices last year. Tripadvisor previously posted a warning on the page: “Tpidvisor is aware of recent media reports or events affecting this restaurant, which may not be reflected in estimates on this list”, she said.
