NATO defence ministers agreed to significantly increase military capacities for each member state, as well as for spending 5 per cent of GDP on defence.
At the summit held in Brussels last days, the ministers agreed that 3.5 per cent of GDP would be used for “basic defence extensions” such as heavy weapons, tanks and aircraft.
While 1.5 percent of GDP will go annually to military infrastructure, surveillance and cyber power.
“These objectives show what areas the Allies must invest in in the coming years”, the secretary general said. NATO, Mark Rutte.
The United States was one that encouraged member states to dramatically increase spending and that is exactly what they expect to see a reliable <x0-progress” very soon.
“The threats you face NATO is growing and our opponents are not expecting us to re-arm, or to be ready if they make the first move”, Rutte said.
In a press proposal, the Alliance's chief said that increasing spending to 5 per cent is an urgent need, as Russia may attack member states in the coming years.
I mean, because otherwise you better start Russian-language courses, or leave in New Zealand, Rutte said. /Periscope/
