Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran has produced enough-rich uranium for nine nuclear weapons.
Tehran has repeatedly insisted that he is not building a bomb.
So how accurate is the Israelite leader's claim?
It is not clear how close Iran can be to building a nuclear bomb, but it has made considerable progress in producing its main ingredient - highly enriched uranium.
In a report sent to member states on 31 May, the UN nuclear watchdog, The IAEA, it had said Iran possessed an amount of uranium enriched up to 60% purity yet not suitable for weapons, but enough to eventually produce nine nuclear weapons if further rich to 90%, writes CNN, broadcast Periscope.
“Iran can produce a nuclear weapon in a very short time. Could be a year. It could be in a few months”, Netanyah said when he announced the bold operation “Reusing Leon”.
“This is a clear and present threat to Israel's survival”, he added.
Iran has reportedly significantly increased its uranium enrichment programme since Donald Trump withdrew from a nuclear agreement in 2018.
It started with about 150kg of uranium enriched at 3.6%, which is enough for nuclear reactors and a peaceful nuclear programme, and is now 50 times higher than the level of 2018.
In 2023, The IAEA said the particles of uranium enriched in cleanliness 83.7% near the bomb's degree levels were found at an Iranian nuclear facility.
Its stomach of uranium enriched by 60% had also increased to 128.3kg, the highest documented level then.
Otherwise, the IAEA has long accused Iran of violating its obligations, but on Thursday, for the first time in almost 20 years, its board adopted a resolution declaring Iran has officially violated obligations.
Iran promised to respond by escalating its nuclear activities. /Periscope
