“Iran bears a heavy responsibility for destabilising the region,” said Macroron.
It is continuing to enrich uranium unwarrantedly and to percentages that are very close to what is needed for a nuclear device. ”
Despite the call for restraint and caution, Macron acknowledged that the resumption of diplomatic efforts, in particular US negotiations with Iran on the nuclear agreement that had resumed two months earlier, would be very difficult under the current circumstances.
The current “situation poses a risk of uncontrolled escalation,” warned the French president, adding that Iran's activities directly threaten Europe as well.
He also stressed that if Iran attacks Israel, France will protect it, as it has in the past, but ruled out any participation in a military operation against Tehran.
Macro also warned of potential consequences in the global economy if tensions between the two states escalate further.
