The house, known as Bon Secors, was a place where young pregnant women were exiled to give birth and work free of charge. Their children were often adopted without consent or died in unclear circumstances. Only two of the 798 victims have been properly buried.
The investigation was allowed after a decade of public pressure, and thanks to the work of historian Catherine Corless, who discovered this tragedy in 2014. The process of identifying the bones and redependence is expected to last for up to two years, demanding justice for Ireland's forgotten children.
