Kosovo's incumbent government announced that the selection of 50 people -- who will be sheltered to Kosovo after being expelled from the United States -- will be done in co-operation with American authorities and given national security and public order.
This commitment comes as part of a decision by Kosovo's acting government, adopted on 11 June, to offer temporary protection to citizens of third countries expelled from American territory.
Also, the previous day, the US Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump's administration to resume immediately with the expulsions of migrants to other countries, except those of origin, by temporarily abolishing the judicial order, which was required for migrants to be able to oppose deportation.
In a statement for Radio Free Europe, Kosovo's acting government spokesman, Kryeziu, said the cases of foreigners in Kosovo would be reviewed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, while temporary protection will last up to a year.
It is also known that during this period, conditions in the country from which these people come will be assessed and measures will be made for their voluntary return.
“Based on our legislation in force, persons in temporary defense, the state of Kosovo offers basic conditions for living, including housing, acomom, food, clothing and toilet packages, as well as access to health care, including: emergency health care and treatment of disease”, Kryeziu said, for Kryeziu, REL, broadcast Periscope.
In the statement, it also stresses that Kosovo has previous experiences with offering temporary protection to citizens from third countries.
An example is cited by Afghan citizens' haven in 2021, in co-operation with NATO and the United States, as well as the acceptance of Ukrainian journalists through the “Gasers programme at Residence”.
According to spokesman Kryeziu, these experiences testify that Kosovo institutions are ready and able to manage such processes.
He said the incumbent government named the US “the steadfast” and expresses gratitude for continued assistance and support, especially on Kosovo's road towards Euro-Atlantic integration.
The US State Department has welcomed Kosovo's decision to accept the outcasts, saying the US “is grateful to”.
Kosovo's incumbent Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has said earlier that Kosovo authorities will work “in close co-operation with relevant American authorities throughout the process”.
Some American diplomats and analysts have commented on Kosovo's agreement as the symbolic “getor of the symbolic”, but have stressed that such a thing does not profoundly alter the dynamic of relations between the two countries. /Periscope/
