A prominent Democrat lawmaker in Minnesota and her husband were killed in a politically motivated assassination, as well as another Democrat senator and his wife were shot in the early hours of Saturday, staying wounded.
Democrat state representative Melissa Hortman is dead, as did her husband, Mark, the state governor, Tim Walz, at a press conference Saturday. He said shooting “seems to be a political-incentived murder”. Hortman was the highest democrat in the Minnesota House of Representatives and former Parliament Speaker.
The armed man is still at large, officials said on Saturday, and the town of Brooklyn Park is still on a housing order. He was imitating a police officer dressed in a uniform that would look real to most people, police said.
“They ran a vehicle that looked just like a four-field police vehicle”, said Brooklyn Park Police chief Mark Bruley at a press conference. The “was equipped with lights, emergency lights, which looked just like a police vehicle, and yes, he wore a vest with electrical weapons, other devices, a badge very much like mine, that, of course, if they were in this room, it would be assumed that they were police officers”.
The man had a list of lawmakers and other officials in the vehicle police searched and sent alarms to take action and offer security to others, Bruley said.
“There was a list of individuals, and individuals targeted in this situation were on that list”, said Drew Evans, the overseer of the Minnesota criminal arrest office. He added it was “very early in the investigation” to provide a motive or assess whether the victims were targeted for their political affiliation, but that he believes the state will be able to provide more information on the post-attack motivation as the investigation takes place.
We are here today because an indescribable tragedy occurred in Minnesota”, Walz said. “Mike and my good colleague, House of Representatives Speaker Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed earlier this morning in what seems to be a politically motivated murder. Our country lost a great leader, and I lost my most beloved friend”.
He added that Hortman was “Somebody who served Minnesota's people with grace, compassion, humor and service sense. She was a scary public servant, a prominent figure and a giant in Minnesota. She woke up every day determined to make this country a better place. It is irreplaceable”.
