But who is Khamene? And why would Israel hit him?
Ali Khamenei is the head of Iran's state and has been in that role for over three decades. His title puts him on President Massoud Peszkian, making him the country's most powerful religious and political leader.
In addition to the broad powers of government, Khamene also leads the harsh religious regime that took over Iran after the Islamic revolution of 1979.
At that time, a popular uprising brought down the Iranian monarchy led by Shah Reza Pahlav and placed in its place a religious republic.
Since then there have been only two supreme leaders, both elected by the Iranian Experts' Assembly. The title “Ajatolah” refers to a senior cleric in Islam Shia.
As supreme leader, Khamene is the country's military commander-in-chief, which can partly explain why Israel views it as a target.
Since Iran is an authoritarian regime, the Iranian people practically have no vote in choosing their leader.
Discidence, including criticism of Khamene on social networks, can lead to imprisonment.
