Iran claims it has received a large amount of information on Israel's nuclear programme, the intelligence minister said Sunday, without providing any evidence to support it.
Khatib claimed thousands of documents were seized, including information related to Europe, the US and other individual countries, although he did not explain how the information was received.
Khatib, a Shiite clergyman who was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in 2022 for his alleged involvement in cyber spying, said the documents would be released soon. He claimed that they were taken through <x0infoption” and “being taken into sources”, but did not offer specific details or evidence.
The announcement, which came days before Tehran faces renewed diplomatic pressure on its atomic activities, appears to be aimed at challenging a high-profile Israeli intelligence operation in 2018.
At the time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his agents had smuggled “to half to” documents from Iran concerning his nuclear programme.
The operation was mentioned by US President Donald Trump when he withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.
Recent Iranian claims come as the governor's board at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) prepares to meet this week, with Western countries reportedly planning to criticise Iran for its failure to clarify old questions about its nuclear activities.
Such a move could lead to reference to the issue to the UN Security Council and potentially cause the restoration of UN sanctions under the “reversion mechanism” outlined in the 2015 agreement. /Periscope/
