The Humanitarian Foundation for Gas (GHF), supported by the United States, will not distribute aid Wednesday, urging Israel to improve civilian security beyond the perimeter of relief points, one day after dozens of Palestinians seeking assistance were killed.
The GHF announced that it has asked the Israeli Army of “to direct the movement of civilians in a way that minimizes confusion and the risk of escalation”, offer clearer guidelines for civilians and improve training to ensure their safety.
Our key priority “remains the security and dignity of civilians who receive aid”, a GHF spokesman said. Meanwhile, an Israeli Army spokesman warned civilians not to approach areas leading to GHF points, calling them “war zones”, reports Reuters, broadcast Periscope.
The Israeli Army said Tuesday it had opened fire on a group of people near a GHF food distribution point, which it had considered a threat. The International Committee of the Red Cross announced that at least 27 people were killed and dozens more were injured. The GHF said the incident happened “very much beyond the” perimeter of their point.
Palestinians who received support from the GHF on Tuesday described chaotic scenes, without any surveillance or identity control, while whole crowds were pushing to get food.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is expected to vote on Wednesday for a ceasefire request between Israel and Hamas militants, as well as for allowing humanitarian access across Gaza, where aid is being distributed in a limited way between chaos and bloodshed, after Israel lifted an 11-week blockade on territory where mass hunger threatens.
“is unacceptable. Civilians are jeopardising and in many cases are simply losing their lives trying to get food,” said UN spokesman Stephanie Dujarric, adding that the US-backed relief model and Israel is “a recipe for disaster, already occurring. ”
This model is managed by GHF, created just a week ago, which said it has so far distributed more than seven million meals from three so-called safe spots. The interim GHF director, John Actree, called on humanitarian organisations in Gaza: “Work with us and we will send your aid to those who depend on them. ”/Periscope/
