Government willing to co-operate with US to accept immigrants

The incumbent Kosovo government has confirmed to Radio Free Europe (REL) that it has expressed readiness to co-operate with the United States of America, in terms of the accession and temporary shift of third-nation citizens to Kosovo, “in line with the set conditions”. “Over a year period, up to 50 persons [...]

“Over a year period, up to 50 persons can be temporarily displaced, with the goal of facilitating their safe return to the land of origin. The government has expressed readiness to engage, with the possibility of selecting individuals from a proposed list, as long as they meet the specific criteria regarding rule of law and public rule”, said Progress Kryeziu, the government's acting spokesman, in a statement to the REL.

He added that further information would be provided meanwhile.

US State Department (DASH) confirmed for REL on June 6th that Balkan countries are involved in contacts within a broader American strategy for the expulsion of foreign citizens without regulated status.

US “Partners and regional leaders are working closely with us to end the crisis of illegal and massive migration”, stressed The UN, adding that the implementation of President Trump's administration migration policy is one of its top priorities, follows Periscope.

The US evacuation of foreigners, for whom there are final orders for deportation, as well as the expulsion of illegal immigrants, protects the United States from foreign terrorists and other threats to national security and public order”, is said to be in response.

From the UN also stressed that continued co-operation with foreign governments is key to preventing illegal and massive migration, as well as border security.

The incumbent Kosovo government said the United States remains a staunch ally of the Republic of Kosovo.

Our bilateral partnership, built over decades, is based on common values and co-operation. We highly appreciate their support, especially in our journey towards integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions”.

Reuters news agency, quoting Bloomberg News media, reported on June 5th that the administration of President Trump is putting pressure on Serbia and other Balkan countries to accept migrants expelled from the United States.

Last month, the US Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to withdraw temporary legal status for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua living in the US, thus strengthening the republican president's efforts to increase expulsions.

According to Bloomberg, the Trump administration is seeking potential destinations for migrants who could be expelled as a result of this decision.

Government on duty, willing to discuss the United Kingdom with migrants ' centers

The incumbent Kosovo government on May 26th has expressed readiness to discuss even the United Kingdom, the proposal for the establishment of “returns centres” in Kosovo for asylum seekers rejected by the British island.

The proposal for establishing return centres is part of a broader strategy of the United Kingdom to address the growing number of migrants arriving on the English island through illegal roads.

However, the international organisation Human Rights Watch has voiced concern that using Balkan countries as host countries for migrants could violate their rights and create new challenges for host countries.

In a similar deal that had also sparked criticism, in 2022, Kosovo and Denmark agreed to rent 300 prison cells at the Corresponding Institution in Gjilan to house foreign prisoners expected to be expelled from Denmark after the sentence ended.

In exchange, Kosovo will benefit over 200m euros, which will be invested in the Correcting Service and renewable energy projects.

This agreement had sparked reactions from international organisations and civil society, which have voiced concerns about the possibility of human rights violations and challenges that could bring management of foreign prisoners in Kosovo.

Earlier, Kosovo had also sheltered about 1,900 Afghan nationals, who were evacuated from Afghanistan after the return of the ruling Taliban in 2021.

After two years of operation, Camp “Liya” at the US military base Bondsteel in Ferizaj was closed. According to the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs, most Afghans had already moved to host countries, while a small number still remain in Kosovo.

Under the agreement between Kosovo and the United States, Afghans would stay in Kosovo until they pass the verification process to move to the US, or to some other Western country. /REL/
