The German government plans to make it easier to declare “safely” for certain countries of origin under a push to reduce the number of asylum seekers, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrendt said on Wednesday.
Under the plan agreed by ministers in the Chancellor's government, Friedrich Merz on Wednesday, approval by Germany's top parliament chamber will no longer be required to decide whether there is persecution in a country that would justify providing asylum for people from there, Dobridt told reporters, Reuters reports.
The upper House of Parliament (Bundesrat) represents Germany's 16 federal states. The Bundesrat crossing will speed up the process.
Merzi has won the national elections in February, pledging a crackdown on migration and turning asylum seekers back to the border, but the harshest stance encountered in legal barriers this week and has drawn criticism from opposition parties.
Migrating is among the biggest concerns of German voters, and a sharp response against newcomers has contributed to an increase in the popularity of the far-right opposition party for Germany (AfD).
The cabinet has also agreed Wednesday to lift mandatory legal counsel for asylum seekers facing deportation.
These are essential steps that are part of a series of measures to bring about the transformation of the” asylum, Dobridt said.
A court in Berlin has ruled this week against deportation by German border police from three Somali asylum seekers. Merz has said Tuesday that the decision could limit the crackdown on migration, but would not stop it./Periscopi/
