The heads of member states of the European Union (BE) have supported the renewal of sectoral sanctions against Russia for another six months, until January 2026.
The deadline for extending sector sanctions is July 31st, and this agreement a month before the deadline is quite surprising, thus avoiding a new drama with Hungary, which repeatedly threatens not to give consent without which there is no extension of sanctions.
EU sanctions must be renewed every six months. There are two sets of sanctions, sectoral ones as the ban on export of various products to Russia and a list of people and companies banned for inflows and frozen assets.
Sector sanctions are renewed in January and July, and the list of people and companies in March and September.
On the other hand, there is still no agreement on the latest 18th proposal for sanctions against Russia, which Slovakia and Hungary oppose. Both countries are seeking to be allowed to continue buying Russian gas and oil.
The Commission recently proposed that the EU finally eliminate its dependence on Russian fossil fuels by the end of 2027./Periscopi/
