These measures were introduced for the first time in 2014 and intensified after February 2022, in response to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine, which the EU considers “unprotested, untested and illegal”.
In its statement, the EU Council stresses that, due to the continuation of Moscow's illegal actions that violate international laws, it is necessary to keep all existing measures in force and to take additional measures if required.
Current sanctions include restrictions on various sectors such as trade, finance, energy, technology, transport and luxury goods. Among the key measures are the ban on Russian oil import, the suspension of SWIFT ties for several banks, and the blocking of pro-Kremlin media in the EU.
The European Union remains willing to intensify pressure on Russia by adopting further sanctions if the situation requires it./Periscopi/
