An Air India plane from Ahmedabad to London crashed near the airport in the Meghan Nagar area of Ahmedabad today.
A video that supposedly shows an airplane flying over a dense area of population, then disappearing behind buildings, followed by a major explosion has spread to the media.
Air India has said that 169 Indian citizens, 53 Britons, seven Portugueses, and a Canadian were on the plane.
This Air India accident is the first time a Boeing 787 crashed in this way.
The model was launched 14 years ago, and only six weeks ago, the aircraft producer praised the fact that the model -- also known as the Dreamlinker -- has reached the moment of transporting 1 billion passengers.
To mark this occasion, the company said that the 787 global fleet of more than 1,175 planes carried out nearly 5 million flights, covering more than 30 million hours of flying hours.
The accident is a major blow to the company, which has struggled to overcome a host of problems, including fatal accidents, with its 737 programmes./Periscopi/
