The European Commission expressed deep regret over US President Donald Trump's decision to double the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, leading them from 25% to 50%. The move, according to the EU, risks undermining efforts to reach a trade agreement. It can lead to harsh countermass.
In a statement published Saturday, the European Commission stressed that the US decision adds uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. On the other hand, US President Donald Trump announced the decision at a rally in Pittsburgh, arguing that doubling tariffs would help the local steel industry and provide more stable national supplies, reducing dependence on China. He also promised $14 billion investments in the US steel sector.
The United Kingdom, which recently reached a zero-tariff trade deal with the US on steel and aluminum, expressed its concern over the impact this decision could have on the domestic industry. A British government spokesman announced they are negotiating with the US to clarify the consequences and protect industry interests.
Trump's decision comes at a tense moment, with negotiations continuing between the EU and the US, while both sides try to avoid a broader tariff fight./Periscopi/
