This service said Kosovo institutions have been handed over specific requests for the renovation and adaptation of Gjilan prison.
Denmark said this is a complex task, as it comes to a Kosovo prison that must function according to Danish rules, reports Periscope.
Prison service said it is a challenging task, starting with renovation of buildings and adjusting them according to Denmark's needs. Also, Danish representatives have made regular visits to the prison facility in Gjilan in order to plan work that will be accomplished.
Such a thing, on May 23rd, has been confirmed for REL Also by Kosovo Core General Director Ismail Dibrani, who has declared that the “prisoners from the Danish state are expected to be placed at the Gjilan city prison in April 2027,”.
However, he has said the renovation process has not yet begun.
The transfer of prisoners is part of a ten-year agreement between Kosovo and Denmark, which envisions the exploitation of the Correcting Institute in Gjilan for sending 300 prisoners from the Danish state.
The Kosovo Assembly ratified the agreement on May 23rd, 2024, two years after it was signed.
Under the agreement, those who will be transferred will not be citizens of Denmark.
Earlier, Denmark's Justice Ministry had declared to REL that the prisoners who were to be sent to the Gjilan prison are persons sentenced to expulsion from Denmark.
However, the Danish state has pledged that it will not bring in high-risk prisoners.
They will not be convicted of war crimes, terrorism, or people with serious mental disorders.
In exchange for this transfer, Kosovo will benefit over 200m euros.
Part will be invested in the Correcting Service, while the rest in renewable energy.
Under the deal, Denmark has promised an initial fivem-euro fee to cover the transition period, from the agreement's entry into force to full functioning of the prison.
Danish Prison Service Confirmed for The REL has already paid its original sum.
After that, payments will be made every three months, depending on the number of inmates present at the institution. /Periscope/
