Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericsen said today that her country will not surrender to the unacceptable “pression” from the United States of America, which wants to control Greenland's half-autonom Danish territory, warning that the right of residents of the island for self-rule is being questioned.
The global <x0nd> that we have built for generations is facing challenges as never before”, she said in a speech with the case of Denmark National Day, Reuters reported.
US President Donald Trump earlier stated that he wants America to take over this strategicly established Arctic island, rich in minerals, for national and international security reasons, not excluding the use of force to achieve that goal, the agency recalled.
Frederiksen added that Greenland and Denmark have been exposed to pressure unacceptable by their closest ally in recent months.
During a visit to Greenland in March, US Vice President JD Vance accused NATO member Denmark of not doing enough for the island's security and suggested the US should protect it better.
His visit followed the election victory of the Greenland Democratic Party, which supports the idea of gaining independence slowly and gradually, instead of doing so through an accelerated process, as suggested by some, according to Reuters.
