Algarve or Albania? Majorca or Montenegro? Avoid countries populated with tourists and head towards these fascinating and coastal secret destinations, writes Elise Morton in an article published in “Telegraph”.
From the Byzantine churches of Ohrid to the noisy streets of the old city of Sozopol, Eastern Europe is full of destinations that combine natural beauty and culture. Moreover, it is also home to fascinating coastal resorts with fewer crowds than the Mediterranean counterparts.
Access to these fascinating beaches is becoming easier, about 1,500 direct flights are launched by Great Britain airports every week to Eastern Europe, according to OAG data, with low-cost airlines. Beach vacations are suitable for a long weekend or an adventure. From sea to lake, from river to falls, these countries offer the best beach vacations in Eastern Europe.
islands of Ksamil, Albania
The special pearl in the Ionian Sea is located in the coastal town of Saranda, southern Albania. Ksamil's four idyllic islands are a paradise decorated with white sand that has largely escaped the attention of international beachmen.
They're only accessible on a 30-minute boat trip or swimming if you need “burn” the delicious cheese-filled pie. Most visitors choose to stay in the nearby village of Ksamil and seize the opportunity to visit Butrint, a World Heritage site of U. NESTO, an ancient national park and city of ruins dating back to the century VII BC.
Lake Ohrid
No coastline? No problem. At least that's the impression you'll get from a trip to the city of Ohrid without going out to sea. Lake Ohrid with the same name, which extends between northern Macedonia and Albania, is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, as well as a tempting destination for holiday by the coast.
After enjoying a swim in the freshwater waters, perhaps accompanied by elegant local swans, walk on the promenade and cobblestone streets of the city protected by U NESTO, before visiting the Church of St. John, in Kaneo. Here you will enjoy a view of the lake that is often compared to the Galapagos Islands, Spain thanks to its biodiversity as you enjoy Byzantine religious history and architecture.
Tooth, Albania
Change the French Revolution with that Albanian with a vacation on the beach of Dehermi, often mentioned as the country's best. Here, radiant white pebbles are crossed by the briny waters of the Ionian Sea and are supported by the Mounts of Lightning. You can enjoy fresh seafood and delicious salads. As you walk through the promenade and hill of the old village of Dhermi, you will marvel at the unique landscape. For a quieter beach and enjoying Albanian wildlife, go farther south towards the beach in Gjipea.
Lake Shkodra
South Europe's largest lake and a protected natural reserve, Shkodra Lake is surrounded by dramatic karstic mountains that rise above wide leagues, monasteries and historical mosques, islands and hidden bays. For a more relaxed rest, you can combine activities known as kayak, summer debut, and bird - watching.
