According to a report, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU Member States authorised the presidency of the Council of the European Union, and on June 11th the Polish Presidency sent a letter to Albania asking it to submit the negotiating position for four “Green Agreement and the Sustainable Interconnection”.
The negotiating position will be presented to Albania's sixth Intergovernmental Conference, which will be organised on a date that will soon be announced by the EU Council Presidency”, the report said.
Albania must present its position for chapter 14, which concerns transport policy, and aims to improve infrastructure as well as road and rail safety. Also, for chapter 15 related to the energy sector and ensuring sustainable and affordable energy supply. Tirana will also present its negotiating position for chapter 21, which is focused on trans-European networks and Albania's infrastructure interconnection with EU countries. Also, it will be negotiated for chapter 27, which deals with environmental protection and coping with climate change, through compliance with EU standards.
The Albanian government said this EU decision confirms the country's successful performance in the membership process.
The executive in Tirana stressed that, through negotiations on these chapters, the state will take concrete steps towards “building safer and modern roads, improving regional and European interconnections, ensuring clean and affordable energy supply, as well as protecting the environment for future generations”.
Albania opened the first chapter of negotiations for EU membership in October 2024. That happened after a long wait, as the country applied for membership in 2009 and had received candidate status in 2014.
Tirana must open and close a total of 33 chapters to join the EU. The opening and closing of each chapter requires approval of all European bloc member states. / REL/ Periscope.
