As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifys, both US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah have raised the possibility of targeting Tehran's almighty leader, Ajatolah Ali Khamenei.
A direct attack on Khamene would plunge the region into unknown territory.
One of the most powerful men in the Middle East, Khamene has ruled Iran with an iron fist for nearly four decades, facing the US and Israel, while suppressing dissidents in the country and advancing Iran's controversial nuclear programme, reports the report. CNN.
As supreme leader, he exercises control of the government, judiciary and military forces in the nation with 90 million inhabitants, as well as Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and the mighty Quads, an IRC clan unit that supervises representatives, including Hamas, Hezbollah and Huthites.
Born in 1939 in Mashhad, Iran's most holy city, Khamene was the defender of Ajatolah Ruholah Khomenin, one of the main leaders of the revolution that brought down Iran's pro-Western monarchy in 1979 and founded the Islamic Republic.
He was also a target for Khomein's opponents and escaped an assassination in 1981 that left his right arm useless.
Khamne became supreme leader after Khomein's death in 1989. Since then, he has expanded Iran's influence far beyond its borders, positioning it as a regional power with which it should be calculated.
For more than 30 years under Khamene's leadership, Iran avoided direct conflicts with its opponents, strengthening itself with a network of militant groups that spread throughout the region, known as “Local Resistance”
This changed when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
Israel's Gaza war and the attacks on Hezbollah, one of Iran's most precious representatives, have braved Israel and destroyed Iran's image as an impervious power, climaxing last week's attacks on nuclear facilities and Iran's top military leadership. /Periscopi
