The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo has said that politicisation of the water sector is costing billions of litres of lost water. The AAK says that by 2021 Kurti had promised water sector reform, but after four years the results are alrg expectations.
When in 2021 Prime Minister Kurti promised a deep reform in the water sector, the public expected a radical change. He was directly involved in the process of selecting boards of water companies, even inviting potential candidates to his office, even before the official decision to appoint them was made. No doubt, this was a move that had never been taken before by any prime minister. But today, four years later, at the end of this government's mandate, the results are disturbing and far from expectations. ”
AAK says except CRU “Bifurcacion” and KRU “Gjakove”, all companies have increased water loss.
According to AAKA, some 100 billion gallons [100 billion L] of water has been lost during 2024.
Official data reported by companies themselves at the Ministry of Economy shows that the situation has deteriorated significantly. With the exception of the CRU Bifurcacioni and KRU Gjakova, all water pipeline companies in Kosovo have increased water loss, reaching an average of over 60%. During the year 2024 alone, about 100 billion gallons [100 billion L] of water has been lost - a frightening amount for a country facing major challenges in managing water resources. Reduced water loss has always been a challenge to this sector, but never before have they been so high. Before 2021, some companies had even begun to score improvements. This makes even more inexplicable the deterioration of the situation, which according to field experts, relates to inefficient governance and the extreme politicisation of boards and management. ”
The AAK says there is no institutional response from the ARRU.
With the deteriorating situation in the water sector, there is no institutional response from ARRU, while the General Auditor's Office appears to have taken no action to examine whether the investment and citizens' payments are being managed transparently and efficiently. ”
The AAK adds that Kurti's reform has remained only on paper.
The multi-pronounced reform from Kurti is left only on paper, while the sector is facing a serious management crisis. This situation not only harms public interest but also endangers the country's sustainable development. If it does not immediately intervene to restore professional standards and institutional accountability, current problems can take uncontrollable proportions in the future. ”/Periscope/
