At least 27 Palestinians were killed and dozens more were injured by Israeli fire near a food distribution centre in the southern Gaza Strip, local health authorities said Tuesday.
The Israeli Army said its forces opened fire on a group of individuals who had strayed from specific roads near the relief centre in Rafah.
The Israeli army added that it was still investigating what had happened.
Deaths occurred hours after Israel announced that three Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in the northern part of Gaza, while Israeli forces continue offensive against Hamas militants who have destroyed much of the enclave.
Reuters couldn't independently verify reports from the north and south of Gaza, Periscope.
The US-backed Humanitarian Gaza Foundation opened last week's first relief centres with the aim of easing widespread hunger among the war-torn population, most of which have been forced to abandon homes to escape fighting.
The relief plan of this foundation, which bypasss traditional humanitarian organisations, has been sharply criticised by the United Nations and renowned humanitarian organisations that say it does not follow humanitarian principles.
The private group, which is backed by Israel, said that on Tuesday morning it had distributed 21 trucks with food and that the operation was conducted “safely and without incident within the distribution centre”.
However, there are ongoing reports of murder as crowds of people gather to receive vital assistance.
On Sunday, Palestinian and international officials reported that at least 31 people were killed and dozens more were injured. On Monday, three other Palestinians were reportedly killed by Israeli fire.
The Israeli Army has denied that it has targeted civilians who were gathering to receive aid and has called them death reports during the relief distribution Sunday “trination” from Hamas.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday he was “terrified” by reports of Palestinians killed and wounded while seeking aid, and demanded an independent investigation.
Israel launched the military campaign in Gaza after the October 7th 2023 attack, when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
In the subsequent fighting, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to local health authorities. / REL
