Women, the job market and poverty: World Bank raises alarm for gender inequality in Kosovo

Gender inequities and low participation of women in the labour market remain major challenges for sustainable growth and poverty reduction in Kosovo, according to the World Bank's latest report, “Appropriation for sustainable growth”. The report notes that, despite a downward trend, poverty remains high and is characterized by major regional differences. Poverty is more common among low education and children's families, so the acceleration of human capital accumulate remains a priority”.
Progress in gender equality, especially in the labour market, has been limited. “Low participation in the workforce and employment, especially in women, remains the main obstacle to poverty reduction”, further said.
The World Bank reports that the employment rate in Kosovo is below 37 percent, an indicator of structural problems in the economy.
This situation reflects deep structural problems, including low labour market participation, incompatibility of skills with market requirements and gender inequalities”.
