Merz confirmed that Europe supports the belief that freedom and democracy are worth fighting.
He described the European Union as a <x0 European peace project” and confirmed that it should be strong not only inside but also outside.
Merz confirmed that Europe must become so strong “that it can restore peace to our continent and guarantee freedom in the long-term” plan. He confirmed that Germany would continue to support Ukraine not only militarily but also economically and politically.
The German Chancellor confirmed that Germany is ready to make “alien decisions” at the NATO summit in June to strengthen European security and transatlantic relations with the US.
The next major unifying project is an independent Europe
According to Merz, the Grand Carl Award is well deserved. He is convinced that we have every opportunity to shape Europe's future so that it can be a good future. It is a Europe that continues to serve people and defend their freedom.
After Merz's talk, Von der Leyen received the Grand Carl Award. She spoke of the meaning that Europe has for it and how it views the future of the continent. Furthermore, von der Leyen called for construction of an independent “Europe”.
“The next big age, our next big unifying project, must be an independent Europe”, Von der Leen said.
According to her, this applies not only to European Union countries but also to countries throughout the continent.
In the face of key “geopolitical tensions, von der Leyen stated that “that we once took as good as an international order has been transformed into international chaos in a very short time of”.
She declared that Europe should take matters into its own hands”. According to her, world order is again characterized by the imperial power efforts and imperial wars”. Her comments come between Russia's invasion of Ukraine and allegations fueled by US President Donald Trump about the future of NATO's transatlantic alliance.
In his speech, Spain's King Felipe VI rejected calls for the breakup of the European Union. We must answer dangerous voices that argue that Europeans would be cheaper, independent and sovereign, if they lived in separate nations, King Felipe VI said.
The International Award of Aachen's Charles the Great has been awarded since 1950 and is considered the highest honour for merits in support of European unity. This year, for the first time, it is associated with a million euros, which will be invested in pro-European projects. DW
