Turkish police arrested 97 students at Istanbul's Bogazici University on Tuesday, who protested a conference on campus attended by a Muslim conservative preacher.
Students were protesting attending the conference of Nurtin Yildiz, a Muslim preacher known for his contradictory views of early marriages. The conference was organised by a student club at university, followed by Periscope.
A total of 97 students were arrested when they tried to break the police cordon at the university campus, Istanbul Governor Davuto Gul said late Tuesday evening, adding that 13 police officers were injured when they fell into a fivem-high construction pit during the clash.
In recent months, students have faced protests in Turkey due to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayip Erdogan's main political opponent.
Students and academic staff at Boğazici have regularly protested in recent years against what they characterised as government intervention in university institutions. /tch
