In an interview for NBC on May 4th, Trump stressed that this would be the only “thing that would accept”, however, leaving open the possibility of Iran maintaining a civilian nuclear energy programme.
The American president said he would consider this opportunity, in line with earlier comments by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had suggested Iran could operate civil reactors if it imports enriched uranium.
It's civil energy, but as you know, it often leads to military wars. We don't want them to have nuclear weapons. It's very simple”, Trump said.
He added that Iran, as a rich oil country, does not really need nuclear power for electrical purposes. I'm inclined to say, what do you need him for? You have enough oil, he said.
Trump's comments are seen as a rejection of the possibility of a new version of the 2015 nuclear agreement, which he had withdrawn from the US. Jason Brodsky, policy director of the organisation “United Aginst Nuclear Iran”, wrote on the X network that this interview clearly shows that the administration is not interested in a new deal with Iran. /Periscope/
