President Donald Trump has presented new details of his ambitious plan for a missile defence system called “Golden Cup”, worth billions of dollars, to protect the United States from foreign attacks.
He stressed that this project must be completed before leaving office.
We will have completed it within three years”, Trump told reporters while presenting the plan Tuesday at the Oval Office. Once fully built, the Golden Cup will be able to seize the missiles, even if they are released from other parts of the world”, he said.
High-profile defence contractors and technology companies including Elon Musk's SpaceX are already competing for shield construction, making direct proposals to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
However, security experts have expressed scepticism for the timeline, cost and feasibility of the project, the US Administration has not yet provided clear details on the technical development of the shield, which is inspired by Israel's “Iron Cup”.
While it is not yet known what exactly the so-called “Golden Cup” will look like, experts point to major changes in scale and scope. The Iron Cup protects areas populated against short-range threats in a country the size of New Jersey; while Trump seeks a space system to protect all American territory, from ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
Trump said the project would cost around 175 billion dollars, and that General Michael A will be led. Guetley, deputy head of space operations in the US Space Force.
Of this amount, 25 billion dollars will come from spending cuts and from the new fiscal bill the president is urging the republics to approve.
According to him, Canada has also expressed interest in becoming part of the project. In a statement to Reuters, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office confirmed that they are in discussions with the American authorities about strengthening NORAD and involvement in the “Golden Cup”.
Earlier in May, the Pentagon presented the White House with three options for developing the small, medium and large system, but Trump did not specify which one he had chosen. He said that a <x0rcitext has already been approved for this latest” technology system.
The defence department has developed a draft architecture and a implementation plan for a Golden Cup system, which will protect the US from a wide range of global missile threats,” said Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell in a statement to CNN.
However, the administration's assessments of time and cost conflict with those of some military officials. Retired Vice Admiral Mark Montgomery told CNN that the creation of such a system could be possible within 7 to 10 years, yes and then there will be major restrictions by protecting only federal objects and major cities. Other experts say that the actual cost may reach several hundred billion dollars, and the correct assessment is almost impossible.
The United States has been discussing building a missile shield for decades, but high technology and costs have made it impossible so far. A recent report by the Defense Intelligence Agency warned that the United States faces increased risk from China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, which can use ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, long-range cruise missiles and bombers to hit American territory.
Construction of the Golden Cup will require close co-operation between many government agencies and private contractors.
The project is expected to be extremely costly. Only for next year is 25 billion dollars anticipated, while the Congress Budget Office has estimated that over a 20-year period, the cost could exceed $500 billion.
This project also represents a lucrative opportunity for the private sector, as the government will not be able to realise it on its own. /Periscope/
