George Simion, a Eurosceptic who has promised to put Romania first, won 40.9% of Sunday's vote and is expected to win a runoff on 18 May.
He will face Bucharest's liberal chairman, Nicuşor Dan, who beat the Social Democrats candidate (PSD) by a narrow margin.
Ciolacu told party supporters that, since the coalition had failed to meet its goal and “had no credibility following the vote in Romania, I would propose that the PSD leave this coalition”.
His party had come to power only in a pro-- The EU after the December 1st 2024 elections, though George Simion's far-right party, along with two other groupings, had attracted a third of the votes.
Simion's victory was mainly prompted by popular disappointment at canceling presidential elections late last year. His possible success on May 18th is expected with nervousness in European capitals, as well as in Kiev. He has said he wants an EU with strong and sovereign nations.
Ciolacu is now expected to submit his resignation to interim President Ilie Bolojan, who will then appoint a temporary prime minister.
Boloyanni himself assumed the role of acting president last February due to scandal surrounding the annulment of the presidential vote. /Periscope/
