Speaking to journalists who had gone to Rome to cover his choice as the first American pope, freedom of speech and media, he called “the precious gift”.
Pope Leon was met with ovations as he entered the Vatican audience for his first meeting with representatives of the general public.
He called on journalists to use words for peace, to refuse war and to give <x0yapin voice” to those who do not, follows Periscope.
“Kisha sees in these witnesses I'm thinking about those who report from the war risking their lives, the courage of those who protect dignity, justice and the right of people to be informed, because only informed people can make free choices”, he said.
Pope Leon expressed solidarity with journalists imprisoned around the world.
“The defeat of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of the nations and the international community, calling all of us to protect the precious gift of freedom of speech and of the press”.
After the short talk, reflecting on the power of the word for good, he greeted some of the journalists in the front lines and then shook his hands with the crowd, passing through the central corridor.
Journalists later shared some of the few words they shared with him. /REL/
