Poland's presidential candidate burns EU flag

Poland's presidential candidate and far-right Eurodeput, Grzegorz Brown, has caused another serious political incident after burning the European Union flag within the Ministry of Industry building in Katowice. Before he burned the flag, he wiped his shoes on it, in a symbolic act of insulting to the EU. The incident comes [...]

The incident comes just a day after the European Parliament stripped Brown of his immunity, paving the way for prosecution by Polish authorities for several previous actions.

In December 2023, Brown used a fire extinguisher to extinguish Hanuka's candles in the Polish parliament in protest against celebrating Jewish festivals in state institutions. He claimed that Hanuka is not a religious holiday, but a historic event of a foreign state, and criticised the Chabad-Lubavitch organisation that organises this event annually in parliament.

Poland's state prosecutor had demanded the removal of Brown's Europarliamentary immunity following the June 2024 elections, in which he was re-elected as representative to the European Parliament.

Brown faces several criminal charges, including insults by a religious group in the Polish parliament, interruptions of a Holocaust lecture at the German History Institute in protest of claims to include Poles, as well as the removal and disposal of a Christmas tree decorated with signs of LGB by a court in Krakov.
