Kosovo lawyer Aryan Koci has reacted to the organisation's annual press freedom index rankings Reporters Without Borders, where Kosovo ranks worse than Serbia. Koci expresses surprise as Kosovo ranks worse than Serbia, along with the writings and titles from the media that take place there for Kosovo.
Koci has counted several media promotional headlines in Serbia, which according to him “these are not crazy Facebook comments, but headlines in the media with huge headlines in Serbia”.
Lawyer Koci has counted the killings of journalists in Serbia to show the state of media freedom there.
“Serbia press freedom?!!, “)iptari su krive za sve!”, “Albanians are guilty of everything! ) Kurir, “iptarski lovi: Kradu, laêu, Ubiyaju”, “Albanian work: steal, lie, kill” Informer. These are not crazy Facebook comments, but headlines in the media with big headlines in Serbia. In this daily reality, Reporters Without Borders say Serbia has more press freedom than Kosovo. We're talking about a place where journalists are killed, threatened, persecuted. Where the media don't inform, they serve the government. Where any criticism of the president is considered treason”, Koci wrote on Facebook.
According to him, almost all pro-government media in Serbia publish discriminatory, inaccurate and openly offensive news daily against Albanians and Kosovo.
“Here are some of the verified titles that circulate in Serbia: “ “;iptariy spremay pazao za Srbe!” “Albanians are preparing hell for Serbs!” Well, “Ubistvo Srba na Albanski način”, “The murder of Serbs in Albanian style” Kurir, “Albanians want war! ” Hello, “Pakleni Plan Albanaca: Ubistvo Srba za Boić!”, “The evil plan of Albanians: killing Serbs at Christmas! ” The word “iptar” is an irreverent and racist term. Courts in Serbia have banned it, but its use in the media continues as the daily rate”, he writes.
According to Koci, these titles are not mistakes, they are strategies, intended to demonise Albanians and produce fear.
In a long post by Koci, a silent effort to equate Kosovo with an authoritarian regime is also said to be the “To devalue everything we've built with great effort.
“Reporters without Borders have become, deliberately, part of this campaign. Not because they're corrupt. But because they rely on wrong sources. Impartial. And sometimes, manipulated. I as a free citizen of a free state I have zero respect for an organization that makes such differences offensive and unfair. Especially without knowing who those people from Kosovo are giving false estimates and selling them for analysis”, he writes.
Otherwise, Kosovo has marked the biggest decline in the last 15 years in the organisation's annual press freedom index Reporters Without Borders, ranking 99th in the world from 180 states.
Of the region's worst-ranked countries is Kosovo, 99th, followed by Serbia in 96th place, then Bosnia and Herzegovina 86th, Albania 80th, while Bulgaria holds 70th place, broadcasts Periscope. And Montenegro ranks 37th in 2024.
The first spot on the list, currently in nine years, keeps Norway, which is estimated to be the world's freest place for journalists. The second place is Estonia, followed by the Netherlands, as Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Ireland later arrive. As more closed and dangerous places for journalists are Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, China, North Korea and Eritrea.
