The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Kaya Kallas, has stressed that there is no shortcut to membership in the European Union, reaffirming the strategic importance the Western Balkans has for the EU.
In a media proposal by Pristina Kallas has indicated that the EU enlargement process will be one of its priorities, highlighting Kosovo citizens' aspirations to join the European bloc.
In Kosovo, the overwhelming part of citizens want membership in the European Union”, it said.
However, Kallas stressed that to approach the EU, Kosovo must have functional and stable institutions. It called on all political parties to overcome the current political stalemate and work towards the formation of new institutions.
“Encourages all political parties to come out of the political stalemate in order to form institutions so that Kosovo can benefit from our support,” she said.
Another issue Kallas singled out as a priority was the process of normalising relations with Serbia. She confirmed the EU's commitment to facilitating and supporting this process.
“You are equal partners on the table and, as EU representative, I will support this process”, Callas concluded.
