At least 44 people lost their lives Thursday as a result of Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, according to the Civil Protection Agency in this blocked territory.
Civil defence official Mohammad al-Mughayir told AFP that 23 of the victims were killed during an attack on a home of the Qreinawi family in the east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. Other “are injured and some are still missing,” he added.
Mughayir also reported on the murder of two other people and the injuries of several others by gunfire by Israeli forces near a US-backed relief centre in the Morag area south of Gaza.
Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), contacted by the AFP in connection with these incidents, said they are investigating the cases. The centre of aid in question is part of a new initiative for the distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which aims to, according to Israel, avoid acquiring supplies from Hamas, but has been criticised by the United Nations and the European Union.
The images broadcast by the AFP by Al-Burej showed Palestinian civilians looking through the ruins of the destroyed building in search of survivors or victims.
In an official statement, the Israeli Army said that in the last 24 hours it had hit “Tenty terrorist targets across the Gaza Belt”, including surveillance posts, sniper locations, military structures, tunnels and other infrastructure that, according to it, were used by Hamas.
Military operations have intensified since the beginning of this month, in the wake of the war that erupted following the October 7th 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli territory, where about 1,218 people, mostly civilians, were killed, according to an AFP balance based on official data.
Of the 251 hostages taken during that attack, 57 still remain in Gaza, including 34 which Israel says are dead.
Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire continue, but remain without results as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates daily. /Periscope/
