Israeli ministers say 22 new Jewish settlements have been approved in the occupied West Coast, the largest expansion in decades.
Some already exist as advanced positions, built without the authorisation of government, but will now become legal under Israeli law. The others are completely new, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
The settlements, widely seen as illegal under international law, although Israel opposes this, are one of the most controversial issues between Israel and Palestinians.
Katz said this action “prevents the creation of a Palestinian state that would jeopardise Israel”, while the Palestinian presidency called it a dangerous “escalation”.
The Israeli Organisation against the settlements, Peace Now, called it “the wider movement of this type” in more than 30 years and warned that this would be “dramatically reforming the West Coast and strengthening the invasion further”.
Israel has built about 160 settlements that inhabit some 700,000 Jews since it invaded the West Coast and East Jerusalem, land that Palestinians love, along with Gaza, for their future country.
successive Israelite governments have allowed the growth of settlements. However, enlargement has increased significantly since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power at the end of 2022 at the head of a pro-colonists' right-wing coalition, as well as the beginning of the war in Gaza, triggered by Hamas' attack on October 7th 2023 against Israel. /Periscope/
