German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington next week to meet with US President Donald Trump, with the war in Ukraine and trade tensions between the agenda points, the German government said on Saturday.
Merzi's office said that the new German leader, who took the lead in Europe's largest economy on May 6th, will meet with Trump at the White House on Thursday, the first face-to-face meeting between the two.
It also said the meeting would address bilateral relations and international issues such as Russia's war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and trade politics.
Merz has plunged into diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and keep western support for Ukraine intact since becoming Germany's leader. On Wednesday, he hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin, reports Associated Press, Transmitt Periscope.
Germany has a strong interest in easing trade tensions between the European Union and the United States. Trump threatened to set a 50% fee for goods imported by the 27-nation bloc starting Sunday, but then extended the deadline until July 9th. /Periscope/
