France will build a new high-security prison on its territory abroad in French Guiana to house drug traffickers and radical Islamists, the country's justice minister announced during a visit to the territory.
Gérad Darmanin told the Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD) that prison will target organised crime “at all levels” of the drug supply chain.
The 400m-euro target (337m pounds), which can be opened as early as 2028, will be built at a remote location in the Amazon jungle in the northwest region of Saint-Laurent-du-Maron.
The plan was announced after a series of violent incidents related to criminal gangs that saw prisons and their staff being targeted throughout France in recent months.
The prison will hold up to 500 people, with a special arm designed to accommodate the most dangerous criminals.
In an interview with JDD, the minister said the new prison will be governed by a “severe prison “designed to combat the most dangerous drug traffickers”. /Periscope/
