The letter is addressed to European Commissioner for the Budget, Piotr Serafin and Justice Michael McGrath, and holds the 26-euro-deputes signature from 5 different parliamentary groups.
Lawmakers in question express deep concern over recent developments in Hungary and ask the Commission to increase pressure on the Orban government so that it no longer violates Union values and laws.
And this can be done by immediately suspending all EU funds for Hungary, according to the law protecting Union's financial interests”, it says on paper.
The letter cites several key issues such as: executive intervention in the works of the Hungarian Integrity Authority, undermining the independence of the judiciary; preventing the LGB+ grouping and passing the law “Sovereign Protection”.
The letter says that this law, voted in 2023, enables investigators to use foreign funds to influence voters and is seen as a tool against government critics.
In addition to the law in question, the Hungarian Parliament is debating a draft to fine the media and NGOs who receive funds from abroad. /Periscope/
