A 6.1 magnitude quake on the Richter scale was recorded today about two hours in the sea area 20 km south of Kasos Island, east of Crete, the National Observatory Institute of Athens reported.
The temperature of the earthquake was at a depth of 64.4 km, Katimerini reported. The quake was felt near Crete, as well as the Rhodes and Kos islands, as well as in parts of Turkey, and a warning to the tsunami was issued as a precaution, writes Euronews.
So far there are no reports of injury or serious material damage. The president of the Organisation for Planning and Protection from Earthquakes (OASP) and geology professor Ephimios Lekas said that the depth of 60km was a key feature of the earthquake, as it lowered intensity to the surface.
According to the first descriptions of the inhabitants, no significant impact of the earthquake was recorded. Lekas pointed out that such earthquakes in that depth usually occur as individual events, without increased activity before or after seismic.
He added that the earthquake occurred at the Greek “Hak”, the place where European and African tectonic tablets crash.
Commenting on possible links to recent earthquakes in Santorini and Turkey, Lekas stressed that there is no connection, as geotechnic conditions are different. /Periscopi/
