In a speech delivered to the European Parliament, Reuten stressed that Kosovo is a partner that shares the EU's geopolitical values and prospects, and that blocking its application for membership is unacceptable.
Kosovo is our partner, shares our values and has the same geopolitical orientation. However, the EU Council continues to block the simple accession of this partner's membership bid. Is that how a partner is treated? He called on the EU to lift restrictive measures, normalise relations between all member states and Kosovo, as well as formally recognise its citizenship.
Reuten also proposed that, even without the Council's approval, the European Commission could start preparing the opinion on Kosovo's application as a step towards further integration.
Kosovo has officially submitted its EU membership application on 15 December 2022, but the process remains blocked due to its non-recognition from Serbia and five EU member states: Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain.
