An emergency due to forest fires is rapidly spreading west of Canada, while 17,000 people are ordered to evacuate to the Manitoba province, which has declared a state of emergency.
According to the Canadian Intergent Centre of Forest Fire, currently more than 166 fires are active throughout the country, of which 84 are considered “out of control”. In addition to Manitoba, flames have affected the provinces Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia.
To help displace residents and extinguish fires, Canadian Armed Forces have been engaged in the field, Manitoba Prime Minister Wab Kinau announced on Wednesday.
Emergency officials warn that due to winds and dry conditions, the situation could deteriorate further in the days ahead.
