St Peter's Square, where 45,000 people gathered last night, according to the Vatican, was emptied within minutes after waiting for three hours of black smoke that came out of the chimney, with many people flocking to restaurants in the surrounding streets for a late dinner after a long reception, writes BBC, tranmiston Periscope.
Because of the secret of the process, experts have stressed that we may never know what caused the delay, and we certainly will not know until after the conclusion of the conflict.
But the absence of a new Pope means the cardinals will return tomorrow to the Sistine Hat with closed doors for other rounds of voting. /Periscope/
