On the 26th anniversary of the disappearance of intellectual and politician Uksin Hoti, the prime minister in his resignation, Albin Kurti, has reacted with a strong statement accusing Kosovo's justice institutions of deliberate neglect and unwarranted silence in the face of a serious state crime committed by Serbian authorities during the war.
Kurti has stressed that, although there are authentic documents and numerous evidence about the disappearance of Ukshi Hoti on 16 May 1999 from Dubrava Prison, the Special Prosecutor and the Kosovo judiciary have taken no concrete action in the direction of the investigation or the establishment of an indictment, even in the absence of suspects.
“In the document to release Ukshin Hoti, signed by prison director Aleksandar Rakocheviq, it is clear that he was released on May 16th 1999. But that day was not the day of his release to freedom, but the day of his disappearance,”, says Kurti's statement, where it mentions the involvement of other Serbian officials like the overseer Branko Komatina, without any investigative action against them by Kosovo authorities.
The prime minister in the resignation has also cited the 2011 publications of Uke Thaci in the book “Masacre at the Dubrava” prison, as well as the evidence of prisoners of the time, as evidence that makes the absence of a literal investigation unwarranted.
The lack of action by the Kosovo Special Prosecutor remains a painful vacuum in our collective effort for justice and truth. Our institutions of justice have a moral and constitutional obligation to act responsibly, not to allow forgetting to replace justice. ”
At the end of his response, Kurti has called for the complete dawn of the Ukshin Hoti case, viewing the issue as a test for the seriousness and independence of the justice system in Kosovo.
Kosovo's “Republic seeks justice for Ukshin Hoti and all those killed by violence. Our story cannot be complete without truth and justice,” has ended Kurti.
