While hundreds of world leaders are expected to participate, Italian authorities have established an unprecedented security perimeter involving air, sea and land protection.
Part of the plan are Euroflyer fighter aircraft, advanced radar, anti-drone bazooka, as well as a military destroyer in the waters near Rome. These measures are intended to ensure the safety of the highest international state personalities to be present.
At the center of the spotlight is the arrival of American President Donald Trump, who will arrive in Rome in the late hours of the evening.
Although his visit will be brief with the scheduled departure shortly after the funeral ended, diplomatic sources do not rule out the possibility of bilateral meetings in the hours before the ceremony.
One of the most controversial meetings is that one possible with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyeen. The two leaders have not faced directly for a long time, while tensions between the US and the European Union have increased significantly due to a tariff war affecting strategic sectors such as automobiles, steel and technology.
The possible meeting comes at a critical moment for transatlantic relations, with Brussels seeking to avoid further escalation of protectionist measures and Washington insisting on renegotiating trade agreements.
Meanwhile, the participation of leaders at the highest-level funeral is expected to serve as a moment of reflection, but also as an opportunity for diplomatic dialogue on the background of a Europe in transformation and an increasingly polarised world.
