The downloads came after Laura Loomer, the activist of the extreme right who once claimed that 11 September was an internal job, asked President Donald Trump during a meeting Wednesday to get rid of some members of the National Security Council staff, including his main deputy adviser for national security, claiming they were unfaithful.
One of the sources said Loomer had compiled a list of about a dozen names and that subsequent dismissals were the direct result of the meeting with Loomer, which was an influential voice about Trump during his 2024 campaign last autumn.
Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Alex Wong was not among those who were dismissed Wednesday. However, a White House official speculated about CNN on Thursday that Wong can come out today, though a final decision remains to be seen.
Wong was one of the advisers specifically targeted by Loomer, who publicly questioned his loyalty to Trump and criticised him privately as a “Never Trumper”.
One of the sources speculated that National Security Adviser Michael Waltz may have been reluctant to dismiss Wong because he is involved in the controversy over the flow of Signal's controversial messages concerning the military attacks on Yemen, which Waltz and his team have been under fire for their start.
The three dismissed officials include Brian Wales, a director for intelligence and a current senior employee of Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Senate Intelligence Committee; Thomas Boodry, a senior director for legislative issues who previously served as the legislative director of Waltz in Congress; and David Feith, a senior director who oversees national technology and security who served in the State Department during the first administration of Trump.
“NSC does not comment on personnel issues,” said spokesman NSC Brian Hughes in a CNN statement.
All the officials who were fired went through the same process of verification in recent months, which included questions about the loyalty to Trump's agenda directed by the current director of the Presidential Staff Office, Sergio Gore.
Loomer offered no details on the meeting, but said “would continue to repeat the importance of strong verification”.
“In respect for President Trump and the privacy of the Oval Office, I will refuse to reveal every detail about my meeting in the Oval Office with President Trump”, Loomer told CNN on Thursday, Periscope broadcast.
“It was an honor to meet with President Trump and present to him my findings, will continue to work hard to support his agenda and will continue to repeat the importance of strong verification, for the sake of protecting the president and our national security. ”
The incident marks the second time that an extreme right activist from the new conservative media has been linked to the dismissal of national security officials, underlining the impact those voices have on Trump's second administration.
Christopher Rufo, a prominent activist for confirming false claims that immigrants from Haiti were eating domestic animals from Ohio during the campaign, published internal records showing employees allegedly exchanging clear messages in National Security Agency chat rooms; Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced in a few days that he had fired people because of his findings.
The Ovale Office meeting with Loomer, which was first reported by The New York Times, took place as the president and his economic team were preparing the tariff announcement at the Rose Garden.
Waltz had been in the Oval Office for other meetings when Loomer arrived for an audience with Trump and stayed as the president met Loomer.
It came after Waltz has faced criticism added by administration officials Trump and those close to the president for the establishment of the Signal chain, where sensitive information was shared about a close US attack on the Houth rebels in Yemen. While Trump has publicly said he is standing next to Waltz and senior White House officials insist he does not plan to download it, numerous sources familiar with the background talks tell CNN Trump is waiting to see how everything will happen.
Waltz is travelling with Trump to Miami on Thursday ahead of the VIV golf tournament at the president's Doral club, two sources familiar with his schedule, including leaving the White House with the president in Marine One, said.
Susie Wiles, chief of staff of the White House, who was among the advisers who worked to control Loomer's access to Trump during the campaign, was present at Wednesday's meeting, said sources familiar with the meeting. Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick said hello to Loomer when she arrived at the White House on Wednesday and accompanied her under the western wing.

The representative of GOP Scott Perry from Pennsylvania, a tough defender of Trump, who was also present at the meeting, brought a list of staff concerns to discuss with the president, said a source for CNN. However, he was not originally scheduled to meet with the president together with Loomer.
It was unclear that when the Loomer meeting was set on schedule, but an assistant said the presence of Wile and Gor underlined that it was a sanctioned meeting.
Gor, who is viewed as one of the president's most loyal assistants, has been among the advisers who have filed complaints from the MAGA world for Waltz.
Loomer, who ran twice for Congress without success in Florida, has made a career out of controversy.
Leaving the radical right-wing online ecosystem, it has regularly tested the readiness of internet companies to implement their service conditions. She once described herself as a proud “lamofob” and wrote on Twitter in 2018 that “Somebody should create a non-Islamic form of Uber or Lyft because I never want to support another Islamic immigrant driver”. It was eventually stopped by Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, now known as X. (Loomer told CNN last autumn that it is not “anti-Muslim”. )

During the campaign, Loomer often appeared in events where Trump was speaking and her bombing posts in social media sometimes seemed to see Trump's next line of attack.
